About the Artisan Group

The Sisal Sisters are a group of women in Kakuyuni, Kenya who make bags out of sisal. This craft is indigenous to their village and has been passed down for many generations. The Sisal Sisters’ love and labor is reflected in the various colors, designs and weaving patterns on the bags. First the women pick leaves from the sisal plant, strip the fibers and roll them on their legs into twine. They dye the twine into different colors, dried it in the sun and then weave the strands into bags. The larger bags can take a woman up to one month to complete. Originally used for carrying coffee and vegetables and even as donkey muzzles, we use these bags to hold anything from towels to TP. more ▶
